So many paperwork...
I felt like I was dragged back into the 80s when I walked into the registration room this morning. Everything was in paper copy, everything. The only technology I found on this campus is the smart card they use for student ID. Everything from application for card access into my office to the contact information for the department were in paper format. At least I can spell.
So the day dragged on, and waiting in lines takes longer than the actual time needed to complete the registration (they call it Matriculation here), and I finally got my student ID card (someone remind me to take a picture and post it here =P"). It doesn't look like much, but I will need it to get around the whole building, after 5:30pm, that is.
The PhD program here is a lot different then the one in the States. As a research student, I am only required to take 6 courses total within the first two years. The next two years will be dedicated to research, and completion of thesis. It is a lot more like actual work comparing to being a student, and I like the change. The professor is a fairly nice guy with thick German accents. Yeah, German...I should have put more time into learning German before...oh, well.
Anyway, the weather is humid and warm, yes, warm, not hot. I guess the really hot portion of the years has not arrived yet. Well, hopefully the ceiling fan is going to be enough to last me through the days, or I can simply hide in the lab. It should be fun.
I have to say that Singapore is a lot different than I have imagined. I think I will enjoy being here.
